This private & personal tour ( no more than 4 people) will begin at a local grocery store to sample some of the best poke and spam Musubi in the world. Starting at a the local grocery stores I can explain where our foods come from and  that's where you will find the best foods. Then head to Kalihi for a Manapua tasting and taro factory. We then sit for a authentic Hawaiian food lunch and learn the history and how it's made. For the finale we head to an old school bakery or shave Ice store.4.2 based on 10 reviews
Highlight of our trip so far. Waikiki is a really fun place to visit, but it can feel a bit insulated from the rest of the city and island. When we travel, we always want to imagine what it's like to live in that place. Who doesn't dream about living in Hawaii after all? Well this food tour with Secret Hawaii Tours gave us that context, and so much more. We were transported out of Waikiki, and into the real, local Honolulu. Lanai is such a great host, super friendly, and has deep knowledge of the area and food culture happening here. Our tour started in the grocery store, which was the perfect place to think about local ingredients, and deconstruct what it really means to eat Hawaiian. From there we built on the history and cultural immigrations into the islands, and how that has affected what people eat. Hawaii is a melting pot of so many Polynesian and asian cultures, all contributing to the local eats. Lanai builds the experience, leading to a feast at one of the small, local markets. My favorite was the Laulau, taro wrapped pork. The taro leaves are an amazing green that is somewhere in between collard greens from the deep south and spinach. Then the BBQ pork wrapped inside. Its an amazing dish, and well worth seeking out when you come to the islands. Book a trip with Secret Hawaii Tours, and you'll get that and so much more. Its well worth it.
We loved the food tour with Linai! He was a wealth of knowledge and super nice! We made several stops and tried lots of local foods. It was a really fun experience for all ages - the group include our parents and our 13 year old twins. Highly recommend!
We were picked up by our cordial, friendly, informative tour guide. We loved the grocery store, learned much about foods native to Hawaii that we do not see in the states. Loved the blend of snacks (chips), main course and dessert. Time line was perfect. Travel was very pleasant/comfortable.
I booked the tour weeks in advance and sent a message to the company about the change of the pick up location. The day of the tour, it was not Lanai who came or to the right pick up location. Luckily our food tour guide was awesome and made the trip an adventure. I called to make a complaint to both the booking and tour company. I was never contacted by the company about the change of tour guide. The main reason I paid $177 for the 3 hour food tour with an Emmy nominated celebrity. Ended up with run around and was just given excuses. Instead they said I should’ve not gone on the tour at all once I found out it was not Lanai. On their website it said you needed a 24 hour notice of cancellation for a refund. How was I supposed to cancel the tour if I was never notified? They were not able to do anything about this besides put it in their notes. What kind of customer service is that? Think twice before you book.
There are surprisingly not a lot of food tours to choose from in Honolulu. My first choice, Hawaii Food Tours, was still closed from the pandemic. As a chef, I try to do a food tour any time I go on vacation to a new spot and booked this June 16, in plenty of time before we arrived. It got great reviews and seemed to cover everything we wanted to see and taste. Upon landing in HNL Sunday, I got a phone message from the company that the time of our tour had been changed from 10 am to a pickup at our lobby at 1:20 pm. We texted back that we would plan on being picked up at the Hilton Grand Waikikian at 1:20 pm on Weds. We were out there on time yesterday excited and waiting for our fun tour. No one showed at the designated time. At 1:25 pm I texted the contact to see if they were coming and got the message “Thank you. Will be there soon. Sorry.” Then another text, “Traffic.” At 1:45 pm I texted again to ask if they were still coming? The response “I am so sorry. I am not sure what happen.” Then I got a call from the driver (and guide?) that he would be there soon that he’d gone to the wrong hotel. Waited some more. Then he called to tell us he was here! “I’m out front in the black van at valet.” Uh no. He was at the wrong hotel again. He offered to refund our money and still do the tour. He was right around the corner and would be there quickly. That sounded OK. We waited a few more minutes. It was now after 2 pm. No black van. We decided someone who couldn’t find our hotel probably wasn’t going to do a very good food tour either. This tour isn’t cheap at $375 for two people. We expected an organized, professional experience. Their website said we were having “A True Hawaii Culinary Experience with Emmy Award Winner Lanai Tabura.” I don’t think that was anywhere close to what we were going to get? Hey Mr Tour Driver …Try Google Maps next time - our hotel readily pops up and is easy to find. We did a circle tour with Hawaii Turtle Tours the day before and had lots of fun and an overall organized, professional experience. That’s not what we got from the Aloha Plate Food Tour. This was all we had planned for the day. We were very disappointed that we didn’t get our food tour and wasted much of our day. Time is as precious as money. Think twice about booking this one.
Our tour with Lanai was fantastic. Not only do you learn about Hawaiian food, you also learn some of the history of the food, and the people, and the influences on Hawaiian culture. Every bite at every stop was incredible, and the tour left me wanting to do another. And another. And another! If you want an insider’s look at Hawaii, her food and her history, book this tour now. You will be so grateful that you did.
Actually the best excursion we did on our vacation Experienced local cuisine and hospitality beyond our expectations. We most definitely do another tour with Lanai. And thank you Bruce for setting up the one of a kind experience for our family ToniOfficer
If you are looking to get away from the crowds and eat a place only locals would know then this is your tour. Lanai immediately makes you feel welcome and is very knowledgeable on everything Hawaiian. He has a great reputation on the island. Traveling around with him makes you feel like you’re visiting an old friend. Thanks for the memories!
